Vermin infestations, cross contamination and the loss of HACCP certification are just some of the things that can go wrong if your premises aren’t baited for rodents. But it gets worse… If you are doing rodent baiting wrong, it can end in death.  Is your business making this one fatal error? **The one fatal mistake people make with rodent baits** Are you placing rodent baits in food production areas? If the answer is yes, you are putting people’s lives in danger. The use of rodent baits in food processing areas is a common – and fatal – HACCP mistake that business make, because rodent baits are also toxic to humans.  This is often done out of the misplaced idea that they are doing the right thing, and even professional pest control contractors can be led to make this mistake by clients who have misinterpreted the regulations. Even though they have been placed in good faith, this can be a fatally dangerous error. **Protect your customers and your business** It is within your power to prevent dangerous toxins from entering areas where they are exposed to food. Baits must be placed away from food preparation areas and they should also be located on a comprehensive bait map so that they are fully accounted for.  When using baits, it is important to ensure that they are numbered and secured outside of the food production area, and there needs to be measures in place to account for and reconcile the use of baits via a rodent baiting document. Never underestimate the risks involved – a single rat pellet can kill a human being.  If nothing else, this should hammer home the risks of introducing toxic substances into areas where they can come into contact with food. One pellet can mean one fatality, and it’s within your power to prevent this tragedy from ever happening.
